Design goals for 2020
I am not one for new year’s resolutions. They often never go anywhere, being too lofty or too vague.. I am a big supporter of measurable goals and today seems as good as any to set them down in writing.
As you know, design is my passion so these goals will serve to deepen my understanding and execution of things related to the discipline. I pull categories from a well known diagram shown below.
This is my road map to excellence in the field. It is a lofty goal, but a very long term one. This year I will focus on motion design and information architecture. Human computer interaction and its umbrella topic, human factors & ergonomics, is my continuous learning path, that won’t change.
Motion Design Focus
Motion design is a very broad subject with a wide range of skill sets involved. It applies graphic design principles to film making, video production, and interfaces using animation and visual effects. My focus will be 2D animation and effects so Adobe Illustrator and After Effects will be my best friends. Vimeo will serve as my storage and portfolio space for finished mograph projects.
Information Architecture Focus
What can I say about this. There is too much that I do not know yet. The field is broad with a long history. I have only scrapped the tip of its massive iceberg.
I have all but one tool to get started, a graphic tablet. Though I could use just paper and upload art to my computer, I’d rather not. Sketches are great for planning and conceptualizing, but I want fine grained control of the finished assets. My research has lead me to the Wacom Intuos Pro.
It seems the most full featured item for the price while being advanced enough that I would not out grow it for a while.
I will need to brush up on my drawing skills for this, wish me luck!
